Wink Attack: A Classroom Social Deduction Game for ESL Learners
Looking for a classroom game that gets students talking, reading body language, and laughing — all at once? Wink Attack (also known as Wink Murder, The Killer, or Drop Dead) is a zero-prep social deduction game that works brilliantly in ESL classrooms at every level.
What Is Wink Attack?
One student secretly becomes the attacker. Their weapon? A subtle wink. Players mingle or sit in a circle, and anyone who receives a wink must dramatically “die” — waiting a few seconds so they don’t give away the attacker. A detective (or the whole group) tries to catch the attacker before everyone is eliminated.
Why It Works in ESL Classes
- Eye contact and non-verbal communication — students practise a core real-world skill
- Accusation language — “I think it’s ___,” “My suspect is ___,” “I accuse ___ because ___”
- Turn-taking and discussion — detective rounds generate natural conversation
- Zero materials needed — any size group, any level
- High energy, low anxiety — great for warming up shy classes
How to Play (Quick Version)
- One volunteer leaves the room. The class secretly selects an attacker.
- The volunteer returns as the detective. Everyone can see each other.
- The attacker winks discreetly at victims, who count silently to 3, then “die” dramatically.
- The detective gets 3 guesses to identify the attacker.
- Swap roles and repeat.
Variations to Try
- Two Attackers — harder for the detective, more chaos
- Silent Round — no talking; pure body language
- Speed Round — 90-second time limit per round
- Vocab Round — victims must say a target word before dying
