Its Tianwen-1 spacecraft successfully landed a rover named <strong>Zhurong<\/strong> on the surface of Mars \u2014 making China only the second country ever to operate a rover on another planet. The landing site was a vast, flat lowland called <strong>Utopia Planitia<\/strong>, one of the largest impact basins in the entire solar system.<\/p>\n<p>Zhurong (\u6731\u878d) is named after the Chinese god of fire. Despite its fiery name, its most stunning discoveries are all about water.<\/p>\n<h3>China&#8217;s Tianwen-1 Mission<\/h3>\n<p>Tianwen-1 means &#8220;Questions to Heaven&#8221; \u2014 a poetic name from an ancient Chinese poem. The spacecraft carried an orbiter, a lander, and the Zhurong rover all in one mission. Zhurong is roughly the size of a golf cart and carries six scientific instruments, including cameras, a spectrometer, and a ground-penetrating radar that can &#8220;see&#8221; beneath the Martian surface.<\/p>\n<h3>A Planet That Once Had an Ocean?<\/h3>\n<p>For decades, scientists suspected that Mars once had liquid water on its surface. They had photographed ancient river valleys, lake beds, and delta formations from orbit. But <strong>Zhurong provided the first on-the-ground, subsurface evidence<\/strong> of a major ocean that may have covered up to <strong>one-third of Mars<\/strong> billions of years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The evidence came from Utopia Planitia itself \u2014 a region that scientists believe was once the floor of a massive northern ocean. Zhurong&#8217;s high-frequency ground-penetrating radar detected <strong>continuous layers of buried sediment<\/strong> stretching over 1.2 kilometers along its route. These layers were found between <strong>10 and 35 meters below the Martian surface<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>The Ancient Beach Discovery<\/h3>\n<p>One of Zhurong&#8217;s most dramatic findings was the discovery of what appears to be an <strong>ancient buried beach<\/strong>. The rover&#8217;s radar detected smooth, gently-sloping sandy layers beneath the surface \u2014 layers that were parallel to a nearby rocky cliff and rose at a <strong>shallow 15-degree slope<\/strong>. On Earth, this kind of slope is typical of a sandy beach where waves gradually wash onto shore.<\/p>\n<p>The sandy layers were found buried about <strong>10 meters (33 feet) underground<\/strong>, suggesting they were deposited billions of years ago and later covered by dust and volcanic material.<\/p>\n<p>Scientist <strong>Hai Liu<\/strong> of Guangzhou University, a member of the Tianwen-1 team, stated: <em>&#8220;Even though Mars&#8217; surface has transformed dramatically over billions of years, our radar data has provided direct evidence of coastal deposits that aren&#8217;t visible on the surface.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Planetary scientist <strong>Michael Manga<\/strong> of UC Berkeley noted that the orientation of these features is <em>&#8220;parallel to what the old shoreline would have been&#8221;<\/em> \u2014 exactly what you&#8217;d expect to find at a beach.<\/p>\n<h3>How Old Is This Ocean?<\/h3>\n<p>Scientists estimate that the ancient Martian ocean existed during a period called the <strong>Late Noachian to Early Hesperian<\/strong>, approximately <strong>3.4 to 4 billion years ago<\/strong>. The ocean may have persisted for millions of years \u2014 long enough to deposit the thick sediment layers Zhurong detected.<\/p>\n<p>By roughly <strong>3.42 billion years ago<\/strong>, the ocean had largely evaporated or frozen. But remnants may still exist below the surface as ice or hydrated (water-containing) minerals.<\/p>\n<p>Forsker <strong>Benjamin Cardenas<\/strong> of Penn State University emphasized the importance of this finding: <em>&#8220;Shorelines are great locations to look for evidence of past life.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>The Deuteronilus Contact<\/h3>\n<p>Geologists have a name for the proposed ancient shoreline on Mars: the <strong>Deuteronilus contact<\/strong>. This boundary sits at roughly <strong>\u22123,580 meters elevation<\/strong> (below a reference level called the areoid).
