How to Improve English Speaking | 10 Tips That Work

Want to improve your English but not sure where to start? In this lesson, I’ll share 10 practical tips that actually work — tips I use with my own students every day.

Tip #1: Learn in Full Phrases, Not Just Words

Say Full Phrases - English learning tip
Learn phrases, not just individual words

Instead of learning individual words, group words together into phrases.

Don’t just learn “apple” — learn:

  • “I would like an apple.”
  • “Do you have an apple?”

Why? Native speakers think in chunks and phrases. You’ll learn grammar automatically, and it sticks in memory better.

Tip #2: Watch TV Shows and Movies

Watch TV to learn English
Watch your favorite shows repeatedly

Pick something you actually like and watch it multiple times.

  • Beginner: Watch 5-minute clips repeatedly
  • Intermediat: Watch with English subtitles
  • Canggih: Watch without subtitles
The Karate Kid movie for learning English
Movies like The Karate Kid are great for learning English

Your family might say “You’re watching this again?” Tell them: “No, Mom, I’m studying!”

Tip #3: Listen to Media (4 Parts!)

3A: Music 🎵

Music sticks in our memory. Find songs you love, look up the lyrics, and sing along. One song can give you 100+ new words. Try karaoke!

3B: Audiobooks 📚

Audiobooks for learning English - Harry Potter and Can't Hurt Me
Audiobooks range from Harry Potter to David Goggins — pick your level!

Choose stories at your level — children’s stories for beginners, young adult novels for intermediate, advanced literature for experts.

3C: Podcasts 🎙️

There’s a plethora of podcasts on every topic. Great for learning conversational English.

3D: News 📺

For advanced learners. Speaking is faster and vocabulary is more challenging.

Tip #4: Repeat What You Hear — Say It Out Loud! 🗣️

Hearing a word and speaking it out loud are two different things.

Mouth position for pronunciation
Your mouth and tongue need to practice making sounds

When you say a word out loud, you learn:

  • What is my tongue doing?
  • Which way is my mouth moving?
  • Does it sound like when I heard it?

“Microphone, microphone, microphone. I have a microphone. I am holding the microphone.”

Sounds crazy? Maybe. But it’s very helpful.

Tip #5: Record Yourself 🎤

We imagine ourselves sounding great when we speak. But maybe we’re making mistakes we don’t notice!

How to do it:

  1. Record yourself reading or speaking
  2. Listen back to the recording
  3. Identify what could be better
  4. Try again and compare

Recording is a fast way to find what needs work.

Tip #6: Practice Difficult Sounds 🔤

TH sound practice words - three, think, thumb
The “th” sound is challenging for many learners

You know which sounds are hard for you. Focus on them!

Contoh: Many Mandarin speakers struggle with “th”:

  • “Three” becomes “sree” or “tree”

Solution: Write down problem sounds and practice them repeatedly. Say “three, three, three” until it becomes natural.

It takes time and effort, but improvement is possible.

Tip #7: Find a Language Partner 🤝

Having someone to practice with makes a huge difference.

Your partner could be:

  • A teacher
  • A friend
  • A native speaker (ideal!)
  • Another learner (still helpful!)

A partner keeps you accountable and gives you real-world practice.

Tip #8: Practice a Little Every Day 📅

5 minutes every day is better than 1 hour once a week.

The more daily exposure you have to English, the better you’ll become. Even small things count!

Tip #9: Be Patient With Yourself 🧘

Learning a language is difficult. It takes time.

There will be days when you feel like you’re not making progress. But remember: Every day you are learning, you are improving. With patience and persistence, you will get better.

Tip #10: Have Fun With It! 🎉

Learn the bad words - having fun with English
Don’t be afraid to explore all parts of the language!

This might be the most important tip of all. Learning a language can be a lot of fun if you let it be!

  • Enjoy the process
  • Find things that interest you
  • Don’t be afraid to make mistakes

Thank you for joining me today, and I hope these tips help you in your journey to improve your English!
