Taiwan's Hot Spring Culture

Reading Worksheet — Elementary (C) | tahricteaches.com

Taiwan is a small island with many mountains. Under some mountains, there is a volcano. The volcano makes the water very hot. This hot water comes up from the ground. People call it a hot spring. Taiwan has hot springs in many cities.

Long ago, Taiwanese people found these hot springs in the forest. They saw hot water and white steam rising into the air. The water was warm and clean. People started to visit the hot springs. Today, many towns build pools next to the hot springs for everyone to enjoy.

When people visit a hot spring, they bring a towel and simple clothes. They walk into the warm water slowly. Then they basah in the pool for twenty or thirty minutes. The hot water feels nice on tired arms and legs. Many people close their eyes and rest quietly.

Some hot springs have a big public pool. Many people share this pool together. Other hot springs have a small private room for one family. A private room costs more money, but it is quiet. Visitors can choose the pool they like best.

Doctors say hot spring water has good minerals for the skin. After a long soak, people feel calm and happy. They santai their body and mind. Every year, thousands of visitors travel to Taiwan just for the hot springs. Many come in winter, when the cold air makes the hot water feel even better.
