These workers stood in elevators all day. They helped people go up and down in buildings. The elevators were not automatic like today. Someone had to control them by hand.

Elevator operators worked in department stores, hotels, and office buildings. They wore nice uniforms and white gloves. They had to push and pull levers to make the elevator move. They also had to announce which floor the elevator was on. ‘Second floor, ladies’ shoes!’ they would say.

This was a working class job. The pay was not very high, but it was steady work. Many operators worked from morning until night. They stood for many hours every day. The job needed no special training, but workers had to be polite and neat.

Elevator operators were most common from the 1920s to the 1950s. During this time, many new tall buildings were built. All of these buildings needed operators. There were thousands of these jobs in big cities like New York and Chicago.

In the 1950s, new elevators started to have buttons. People could press buttons to choose their floor. These automatic elevators did not need operators. Slowly, the job disappeared. Today, only a few luxury hotels still have elevator operators.

Завантажити робочий аркуш у форматі PDF для друку

Рівень: Рівень С

A. Зіставлення словникового запасу

Зіставте кожне слово з його визначенням.

1. operators

2. workers

3. automatic

4. control

5. department stores

6. hotels

7. uniforms

8. push

9. announce

10. buttons

a. people who work with machines

b. people who have jobs

c. working by itself without a person

d. to make something work the way you want

e. big shops that sell many different things

f. places where people pay to sleep when traveling

g. special clothes worn at work

h. to press against something with force

i. to say something in a loud, clear voice

j. small round things you press to make machines work

Б. Правда чи неправда

Для кожного твердження напишіть Т (Правда) або Хибно (Неправда).

Elevator operators worked sitting down all day.

Operators had to wear uniforms and white gloves.

The job required many years of special training.

Operators used their hands to control old elevators.

This job was most common in the 1920s to 1950s.

Elevator operators worked only in department stores.

The job disappeared when automatic elevators were invented.

Operators had to announce what floor they were on.

Today, all hotels still have elevator operators.

C. Заповніть пропуски

Word Bank: operators, uniforms, control, buttons, announce, automatic, department

Elevator _______ stood in elevators all day to help people.

They wore nice _______ and white gloves to work.

Workers had to _______ levers to make the elevator move up and down.

When automatic elevators got _______, people did not need operators anymore.

The operators would _______ which floor the elevator was stopping at.

D. Питання для розуміння

What did elevator operators do all day?

Where did elevator operators work?

What clothes did operators wear?

Why did the job of elevator operator disappear?

When were elevator operators most common?

E. Питання для обговорення

Would you like to work as an elevator operator?
