Key Vocabulary Preview
Students study all twelve words before reading the passages. A sample:
- blockbuster — a film that earns an enormous amount of money at the cinema and becomes a major cultural event
- VHS — short for Video Home System; a magnetic tape format for recording and playing back films at home, dominant throughout the 1980s
- cultural phenomenon — something so widely popular it significantly shapes society, language, fashion, or everyday behaviour
- franchise — a series of related films sharing the same characters or world, often extended into spin-offs, games, and merchandise
- nostalgia — a warm, often idealised feeling of longing for a happier past, triggered by music, objects, or experiences from that time
The Reading Passages
Passage 1 — “The Birth of the Blockbuster” traces the word’s original military meaning, the record-breaking box office of E.T. ($792 million, a record held for eleven years), the creation of Indiana Jones, and the genre-blending ambition behind Ghostbusters and Back to the Future. Students practise inference, vocabulary in context, and drawing conclusions from factual detail.
Passage 2 — “Beyond the Screen” goes behind the cinema curtain: how VHS cassettes transformed how people watched films, how George Lucas negotiated a merchandise deal worth $42 billion (more than the films themselves earned at the box office), the unprecedented star power of Schwarzenegger and Sigourney Weaver, and the emotional philosophy Spielberg described as asking “Is the audience feeling something?” Students evaluate True/False statements and produce a structured opinion essay in response.
