Werewolf (Mafia): The Ultimate ESL Classroom Social Deduction Game

If you teach ESL and haven’t played Werewolf (also called Mafia) with your students, you’re missing one of the most powerful speaking games available. It’s a hidden-role social deduction game that generates authentic English communication — debate, persuasion, accusation, defence, negotiation — all in one activity.

What Is Werewolf?

Players are secretly assigned roles — most are Villagers, but a few are Werewolves. The game alternates between Night (Werewolves secretly eliminate a Villager) and Day (the whole village debates and votes to eliminate a suspect). Werewolves win by matching the Villager count. Villagers win by eliminating all Werewolves.

Why Werewolf Is Brilliant for ESL

  • Authentic speaking pressure — students must argue for their survival in English
  • Persuasion and debate language — “I think ___ is suspicious because ___,” “Don’t trust them”
  • Active listening — players track every statement for inconsistencies
  • Emotional language — accusing, defending, expressing doubt or certainty
  • Scalable — works with 7–30+ students

Basic Roles

  • Villager — no special power; use logic and persuasion to survive
  • Werewolf — eliminate one Villager each night; lie convincingly by day
  • Seer — learns one player’s true role each night
  • Doctor — can protect one player from elimination each night
  • Moderator — teacher or chosen student; not a player

How to Run a Round (20–30 Minutes)

  1. Deal role cards — secretly, face down
  2. Night phase — everyone closes eyes; Werewolves pick a victim; Seer checks one player; Doctor protects one player
  3. Day phase — Moderator announces who was eliminated; group debates (5–7 min) and votes out a suspect
  4. Repeat Night/Day until one side wins

ESL Teaching Tips

  • Post a debate phrase bank on the board before playing
  • Rule: English only during Day phase debates
  • Debrief after each game — “What arguments were most convincing? Why?”
  • Let advanced students take the Moderator role
